A self-contained lake-and-club community, one town removed from the crowd.
Lake Toxaway offers a more self-contained lake lifestyle than Glenville or Sapphire, built around a single, distinctive centerpiece: at roughly 640 acres, Lake Toxaway is the largest privately held lake in North Carolina, owned and maintained by the Lake Toxaway Company.
The lake has a real history behind it. The original dam, built in 1902, gave way after a major flood in 1916 and drained the lake entirely. It sat empty for decades until investors rebuilt the dam in 1960 and restored the lake to its original level, kicking off the modern era of development around it. That combination of history and privacy is part of what makes Lake Toxaway feel distinct from the rest of the Plateau.
Lake Toxaway Country Club anchors the community today, combining boating, golf, and mountain scenery with a long tradition of summering in Western North Carolina. It sits about 13 miles and 15 minutes east of Cashiers on US-64, with Sapphire roughly at the midpoint.
The community's anchor club, combining golf, boating, and access to the lake itself.
Cashiers is about 13 miles and 15 minutes away via US-64, with Sapphire sitting roughly at the halfway point along that same drive.
It's a smaller, more self-contained market than Highlands or Cashiers. I can walk you through how it actually works before you tour anything.
